.The Miami River Commission ’s (MRC) Economic Development and Commerce (EDC) Working Group convened on Tuesday, May 11, 2004 , at 2:30 PM , in the Rosenstiel School , 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Library Map Room.  Ms. Megan Kelly chaired the meeting.  The sign in sheet is enclosed.

Discussion of Miami River Marine Industries Symposium – Mr. Brett Bibeau, Managing Director of the MRC, stated Weston Solutions pledged a $5,000 sponsorship for the symposium.  Mr. Bibeau stated that he would also approach a representative from Bean about a possible sponsorship.  Dr. Fran Bohnsack, Miami River Marine Group, pledged a $3,600 donation for the symposium.  Mr. Bibeau noted per the EDC’s recent directive, Mr. Tom Murray, to address the Recreational Marine Industry, and Mr. Kevin Horn, to address the Shipping Industry, are confirmed as speakers for the targeted September 27, 2004 symposium date.  Mr. Bibeau also noted that the Hyatt Regency was confirmed for September 27, 2004 . He stated that the Hyatt Regency is willing to provide the necessary equipment, rooms, and services for September 27, 2004 at no cost, but that the Symposium will be responsible for any gratuity charges that may be applied.

Dr. Fran Bohnsack suggested creating a “Save the Date” type of invitation for potential attendees.  Ms Megan Kelly agreed with this idea and directed staff to obtain estimates from potential graphic designers and printers. The timeline for invitations would be within the next month for the “Save the Date” postcard and six weeks prior to the Symposium for the official invitation. Mr. Bibeau requested suggestions on mail house operators.  Ms. Kelly stated that she would provide contact information for Mr. Bibeau.

Ms. Kelly suggested reaching out to the additional potential guest speakers, especially the Governor Bush, Mayor Diaz, and Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen to confirm the date.  In addition, Ms. Kelly directed MRC staff to:

  • Create a line item budget for the Symposium

  • Complete the 2,500 name database for the mailings

  • Schedule a meeting with the Beacon Council to confirm form of participation

The meeting adjourned
