PROJECT INITIATIVE : Miami River Marine Industries Symposium

Description of the Project:           A tightly programmed day-long symposium to analyze and document the present economic feasibility and conditions for future success of the marine industries of the Miami River and to utilize industry and academic expertise to create a targeted economic development plan to attract and enhance the marine industries on the Miami River, in concert with such major initiatives as dredging, FTAA, Homeland Security and other federal, state and local programs.

Background: A comprehensive Miami River Corridor Urban Infill Plan, created under a Joint Planning agreement between the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County , targets the portions of the river corridor for marine industrial economic development.  The Upper River defined in the Infill Plan as west of 22nd Avenue is indicated for targeted effort to enhance and expand water-dependent businesses on the Miami River .

Rationale for Project:  Gather a panel of top experts in marine industry economics, business operators in cargo handling, shipping, chandlery, boat yards, boat building, marinas, port operations managers, maritime-based economic development, for a concentrated, results oriented discussion of the Miami River marine industry.  Specific outcomes: Characterize current and potential economic impacts of Miami River marine businesses. Determine current and future feasibility of primary components of marine trade on the river.  Identify potential growth segments of marine industry suitable for Miami River .  Adapt the charette format popular in urban design to create actionable project(s) to attract new marine business and enhance viability of existing marine business on the Miami River .
