  Minutes of meeting

.The Miami River Commission ’s (MRC) Economic Development and Commerce (EDC) Working Group convened on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 , at 2:30 PM , in the Rosenstiel School , 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, MAF Seminar Room.  Ms. Megan Kelly chaired the meeting.  The sign in sheet is enclosed.

The EDC agreed to the official name of the event as, “The Miami River Marine Industries Symposium”.  The objective of the event will be to attract new marine industrial businesses to the appropriate sections of the Miami River .  Ms. Adriana Cabrera, MRC Assistant Managing Director, stated she had compiled the mailing lists provided by the Miami River Marine Group, Marine Industries of South Florida, and the Caribbean Shipping Association. The EDC stated that the list should include the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Marine Council, NMMA Board of County Commissioners, City Commissioners, City and County Mayors and Managers, the Dade Legislative Delegation, and the Miami River Commission (MRC) board members.  Ms. Kelly noted that the goal is to develop a mailing list of 2,500 to seek the goal of 250 attendees.  Dr. Fran Bohnsack, Miami River Marine Group (MRMG), stated that she would provide Ms. Cabrera with the Port Everglades Directory and recommended the Florida Customs Broker and Forwarders Association web site as an additional source for contacts.  Bohnsack provided a copy of the American Nautical Services member page.  Ms. Kelly recommended Ms. Cabrera to look at the Florida Shipper’s media list as possible contacts for the event.  Ms. Patricia Hamilton, Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), recommended the website of the National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Marine Operation Organization.  Ms. Megan Kelly discussed the database format for the different mailing lists, and offered if necessary to budget for database processing time.  

 The tentative date of the symposium has been postponed to July or mid September 2004.  Kelly stated that the Beacon Council agreed that a registration fee should be charged to attendees.  Ms. Hamilton recommended that a complimentary invitation be extended to government employees.

The Miami River Marine Industries Symposium will be hosted by the Honorable Governor Jeb Bush or Dr. Pamella Dana, Governor Bush’s MRC designee and Director of the Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development.  The guest speakers will be: Mr. Tom Murray, author of the MIASF Mega-Yacht Economic Impact Study, and Mr. Kevin Horn, whom is completing a Miami River Economic Study focused on shipping.  Additional speakers are still being considered.

The next regularly scheduled EDC meeting was confirmed for the second Tuesday of the month, March 9, 2004 at 2:30 PM in the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
